Dead Man Comes for His Sweetheart

Co-production of Prešeren Theatre, Kranj and City Theatre, Ptuj / Slovenia
Chamber Hall

In the context of contemporary Slovenian theatrical profession, Jernej Lorenci’s name is synonymous with the sharpest insights and a passionate inquiring mind, making him stand out not only from his generation, but also from the entire Slovenian scene. The Dead Man Comes for His Sweetheart was inspired by a folksong with the same opening lines as well as the adaptation of Gottfried A. Bürger’s ballad Lenore. As a consequence of the loss of her lover, the protagonist has to live with a new self that keeps on questioning reality, the existence of his own and his sweetheart’s feelings. The result is a world characterized by a unique folk atmosphere, connected to transcendence, in which the community has the power to create the norms. Lorenci directs in a way that allows the theatre to be in a close dialogue with the tradition of storytelling and the healing power of music.
